Communication Between Lawyer and Client
|
All communications between a lawyer and her client, or
potential client, are strictly confidential. It is crucial that you be as honest and open
with your divorce lawyer as possible, even if you believe the information could
hurt you. The lawyer’s goal in obtaining the best results for you also includes
protecting you.
Information should flow both ways between you and your
lawyer. You should not be afraid to ask your lawyer any question related to
your divorce. When your lawyer asks for information or documentation related to
your case, be careful to provide all information that you have. A lawyer cannot
do her job properly if she is not provided the necessary information from her
client. Advice based on incorrect or incomplete facts may be worse than no
advice at all.
If you do not understand the advice you are given, or find
it hard to accept, discuss it further with your lawyer. California divorce law
is extremely complex and each case presents unique facts. If you feel uncomfortable
discussing an issue with your lawyer, or your lawyer intimidates you, remember
that as a consumer of legal services, it is your right to be properly
represented. If your lawyer is not communicating effectively with you, you may
wish to change attorneys.
