You, as an individual, hire Ms. McKay to serve as a consultant in your family law matter. She is not your ‘attorney of record.’ Instead, you represent yourself in court and are responsible for all paperwork and compliance with court rules and deadlines. Currently, in San Diego County, over 80% of the people filing for divorce are unrepresented. Ms. McKay will assist you with advice, strategy and document preparation, as needed. She can communicate directly with your spouse’s attorney or make court appearances on your behalf if a 'limited representation' contact is entered into.
Requirements to Retain: You pay only for the time you need, in hourly increments. Her hourly rate varies, depending on your situation.
Advantages: Allows you to pay only the services you need. This method is especially effective if you have good business skills or little emotional attachment to your case.
Disadvantages: If you do not share all relevant information with Ms. McKay, she cannot properly protect your interests.
